What do you mean by "broke off in the motor"? Did they just break the ceramic part off or did they actually twist the metal part off where it screws into the head? If that's the case, I would think removing the head and a trip to the machine shop would be alot cheaper and easier than the motor, unless you have other issues like burning oil or low oil pressure.

yep like the duck said it would be best to pull the head if part of the plug is stuck in there. it may be that that plug has never been changed and rusted up in there tight. either way stripped or busted off in there the heads gona have to come off. if your doing one, i would do both sides and have them checked by the shop while there in there. so are you in a position that you can do the work yourself?

Bummer, sounds like you got hosed. Not as bad as my friend with a Dodge Ram V10 though. He had a tuneup done on his truck and the shop only changed the plugs on one cylinder bank! The plugs were so rusted that 4 of 5 broke off just above the threads. Try pulling a head on a 4x4 Dodge Ram V10...
Oh, BTW, that spark plug is almost certainly why your cat got fried (misfiring).

Most likely the first mechanic relized the plug was going to break so he stopped. He should have given you a call and let you decide. The second mechainc should have also warned you before he broke off the plug. I have had customer not risk the breaking plug and just trade in the car.
There are a few option for getting the plug out while its in the car but I can not see any of them working on a #6 plug. There is just no room to work. The only reason to replace the motor would be if there are "other issues" You should just get both head gaskets replaced while its a part if you plan on keeping the car and as said above let a machine shop get the plug out.

You don't need to replace the heads. But you're more than likely going to need to remove at least the right side head so that it can get worked on a bench to get the broken plug out. Once you go that far, you might as well remove the other head so that you'll end up replacing both head gaskets (Murphy's law...if you don't, the other head gasket will blow next month). With the head still on, is there even enough room to heat the crap out of the broken plug with a torch, and get it out with a big easy-out? Since the threaded part is all that's in there, I presume the porcelain and center electrode portion came off with the broken part? That would be good to know, so that you know there aren't any broken parts down inside the cylinder.
