New Battery, New Starter -still won't start!
Hello CF,
I've been reading and learning, but now I have a very specific question I'm sure will be easy for somebody. I have a '98, 3.8 automatic with 156,000 mi -all OEM. It's my daily driver. I replaced the battery two months ago, with no problems. Then a month ago it wouldn't start. I've checked all related fuses and relays, and they're all good. The starter seemed to drag a little before and after replacing the battery, so thinking that might be the problem, I replaced it this past weekend. Still nothing. I have a little over 12 volts on the battery, all the lights/radio/etc work, I can hear fuel pump when I turn the ignition on, but absolutely no other response. Someone suggested I temporarily bypass the ignition switch to see if that could be the problem, and if it is, I could permanently install a push-button starter switch to use with the key in, and in the on position. My questions are:
-Is there something else I may be missing that might be a simple, easy fix?
-If I use a push button start/key in the ignition setup, will that damage or hurt the VATS?
-Other than having a button permanently mounted on the dash, is there another longterm "down-side" to this ignition bypass setup?
Thanks a lot for your help!

test the wires from and to your ignition switch so see if its sending power to the starter solenoid when the key is in the start position. if no power then its vats or wiring in the column or the shaft from the key to the switch is adjusted wrong. if power is coming out of the ignition switch, have someone turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the small wire going to the starter. if you dont have power to the wire then the problem is between the starter and the ignition switch. sorry but i dont have any wiring schematics for the newer style 4th gen.
