Default muffler

would it be worth adding just a muffler to my 98 3.8L instead of getting the whole catback system? Either a Flowmaster or magnaflow?

Thats mine with no muffler. Just run some pipe to the back of the car and there you have it.

When I put my 84 together I was not going to waste my time puting that crappy, small pipe back on just to get me to home then the muffler shop in the morning. So I drove it with nothing after the cat. The V8 made a deep rumbling with a little burble ( kinda like the rolled tips do) sound. I almost considered running just a pipe out the back but I had already gotten a Flowmaster.

The engine does not care wether you have a muffler or not, but the cops and neighbors might. The engine may even make more power. However, you don't want to run an engine without exhaust manifolds or headers, as it might set the engine compartment on fire.

yes you are losing a little bit of power. my car had an exhaust leak and had it fixed. i could feel the difference in power and it sounds alot better too.
