If you cannot figure out brake and or suspension noises then find a good mechanic and stop with these idiotic messages and give us who have a real moving target a chance.

Unhappy Noises

OK everyone,

Now that we have settled the brake problem, I have one that may stump the best but I hope not!

I have a 2000 3.8 V6 Auto with 64,000 miles. Car runs great, great condition, no problem at all with anything EXCEPT:

I just starting hearing a resonance noise/hum but only in the passenger compartment, it is not coming from under the hood. It happens after a few minutes after I start the motor and whether the motor is hot or cold does not matter. I have ran 150 miles and 10 miles, same sound same symptoms.

The resonance noise/hum stops but ONLY when I am in gear and under acceleration, even slight acceleration but comes back when I slow down and sit at idle at a light. Once I hit the gas it goes away. Sometimes it is a low hum and other times it is very noticeable.

NOW, If I put the car in neutral and rev the motor the sound does NOT go away BUT once I put it in gear and accelerate its gone until I slow down again.

Fuel Pump?
Vacuum Leak on the tranny under the floor shift console?
Sending Unit in the tank?

I cannot tell where this is coming from? The only thing that has been a problem is the sending unit in the gas tank and does not give me an exact reading of fuel at the gauge.

Please give me some clues?

If you have chrome wheels, check for peeling chrome that rubs as the wheel rotates!

Default exhaust

I recently fixed a rattle on my 96 3.8 after months of chasing it down. I put a dowel rod to my ear with the engine running. I could hear more noise when I put the dowel rod to the y-pipe than on the cluth housing or transmission. Try (with the engine off) to bang on the y-pipe with your hand to see if it rattles. Mine rattled all the time. Annoying goose chase for months. Finally took the y-pipe & cat off to see if anything fell out. Nothing fell out, but located my rattle. The long part (driver side) of the y-pipe is constructed of a pipe inside a pipe that had come loose. I drilled about five 1/8" holes across it and pop-rivited the two pipes together. Covered the rivets in exhaust patch putty before and after putting them in place. Doesn't rattle anymore and is about 300-400 bux less than y-pipe/cat replace.

baran..is your cat gutted?oh,and nice jack on the post lol.other fellas with rattle a couple i have seen with a ghost rattle was just in front of the cat where pipe goes just above the transmission crossmember.pipe is really close to upper side of the crossmember(but that was on z-28 exhaust)and would occasionally rattle .you could tell it was coming from passenger side.more pronounced if you have a manual trans
