I really appreciate everyone's input. You guys have put the facts out there. It wasn't what I wanted to hear, but facts are facts. The ball is in my son's court now. He does not have the money for a another engine, so I'm not sure what's next. I've been using it while I've been working on my truck. He is currently unemployed. It still runs like a bat out of hell. Starts right up, shifts smooth, engine idles very smooth, no shakes or misses. He will probably just keep driving it till he can get the money for another engine. He says he wants to keep the car. I really like the car. I'm a big time Camaro fan. Already owning a '79 RS with t-tops, a '78 Z-28, a '78 RS, an '81 Z-28 with t-tops, and an '82 Z-28. I even have the '79-'81 gas filler door emblem as a tattoo on my upper arm. All before he was born. He is 18. I will get another Camaro in the near future. Probably a 4th or 5th gen.

might pull the oil filter mount off and make sure the spring is not stuck on the pressure valve. when i took the one off the old engine (have to use the oil filter mount from original engine) the spring was stuck and didnt move like the newer one, i left it in there on the old engine,,, lol.

 

Also might want to keep an eye out. 3800's are very common in front wheel drive cars. With the exception of the intake gasket they are pretty bullet proof. Junk yard tend to have more supply then demand. It is not the norm but I have read about guys find S3 3800 with 30,000 miles on them for $300.

I would try to get a manual oil pressure gage on it. If you have less then 10 PSI go thicker on the oil. I would not hesitate to put a 50w in there. While its not recommended I have seen engine last years on 50w and under 20 PSI hot idle with a little noise.

Also might want to do a the paper towel test. Wipe the dip stick on a dark paper towel and like for shinny flake, if there is a lot the engine is in a death spiral, don't take farther then you are willing to tow it.

 

Yup,been there done that, even used 60wt Harley oil in a tired 283 powered old '63 Chevy pickup and nursed it along for years that way just back and forth to work.
