how much am i looking at
Hey guys its been awhile since ive been on here. I have completly fallen in love with my 96 rs convertible. im getting it repainted new top rims and stereo system in a week. I am also trying to figure out when i need to rebuild the engine its has a lil over 140k on it and is now giving me problems. it has a hard time starting sometimes randomly like its not getting gas also when i am driving the rpm drops very low and is labored like its not getting gas even when i put the pedel to the floor. it then suddenly gets the power and will spin the tires im really confused. anyways im thinking of just rebuilding the engine due to the fact that it has the mileage on it. is 140k low for a rebuild? How much am i looking at and what is needed for a full rebuild. understand i plan on being put into the ground with this car a very long time from now. any help would be appreciated thanks

i have 198+ on mine an counting. I'd look into testing the fuel pressure first, an have u changed the fuel filter? ur pump or filter mite be going bad. new plugs? rebuilds aren't too cheap. but sure some others will post more to help you.

That does not sound like an issue a rebuild would fix. If I was putting the kind of money you are into a 96 I would be tempted to do a rebuild/replacment engine even if the engine ran fine. Is it possibe that a 3.8 with 140K on it is fine, sure. But there are many 3.8's that never made it to 140k. My car was one of them. I bought my 96 with a blown motor with 132K on. I found a low miles 2002 3.8 and switched them out. Since I the yard gave me the entire engine I was able to use most of the sensors and the ignition system off the 2002. That adds up to a lot of parts being half the age and 1/4 of the miles on them.
I would fix the issue you are having and start to plan you upgrade.

They put them on sale from time to time for $14.99. There is a valve on the right side of the motor. Its just like checking air in the tire.

back to the shop
im working 24 hr shifts again at work (army life) anyways when i ge a chance ill go back to the autocraft place and start working on her. i have been to every junkyard within 80 miles from fort lewis and cant seem to find a camaro there to pull apart. they are few and far between here for some reason gotta love washington. to replace the pump do i have to drop the tank? from what ive heard its a real P.I.T.A hope that isin the problem.

yah ive had better luck at the dealer for some parts. wrecking yards dont have any maros here on the coast either. u can do the hatch mod to replace the pump so u wont have to take the tank out.
