Default Gas gauge dosen't work, any ideas?

So my gas gauge dosen't work, well it sorta works. When I'm getting low on gas it sets at about 3/4 of a tank and when I fill up it will move over to full. Now sometimes it will just move back and forth when I'm driving but it usually stays between 3/4 and full all the time. It hasn't worked for about a year and I have only run out of gas once. What goes into fixing the gauge? Is someone going to have to take off the dash and stuff or is it just something that needs replaced in the electrical system or another part of the car.

I do not know if Camaros' have them but my 97 Astro does. It is a fuel gauge sender module located under the dash. Way easier to get to than the sender unit.

The fuel level sender is in the tank, attached to the fuel pump, and is wired directly to the fuel gage.
Test gage before going after the sending unit:
1) Disconnect connector C05A (Black 5 way connector in front of rear axle)
2) Turn ignition ON, gauge should show Full
3) Connect pin #2 of connetor (has a Purple wire) to ground, gauge should show empty.
4) If gage works OK, change sending unit. Got to drop the fuel tank to get to it!
5) If gage not OK, then check for wiring problem, or bad gage.
