So I was driving home from an exhaust shop after having a high flow cat put in, and all the sudden the car dies for no reason. I try to restart it, but I don't hear the fuel pump kick on. So I relieve the fuel pressure from the system and try again, no fuel pump. Is there any way I can be sure its the pump before cutting a hole in my trunk? The car has 201k miles and I bet it has never been replaced.

 

there is a fuel pump primer wire that you can jump to 12 volt to test fuel pump. http://shbox.com/1/fuel_pump_prime.jpg if you jump 12 volts to it and get nothing its either a bad connection back to the fuel pump or the pump itself.

 

Solved the problem, the relay underneath the drivers side kick panel had a bad connection, reconnected it and problem solved

 

Whew! That's a whole lot better than replacing the pump. But with over 200k miles nobody needs a crystal ball to see there's a fuel pump in your future, LOL.

 

MY question, I did this and I heard the fuel pump on my 93 camaro building pressure.. But before that sometimes the pump would work, sometimes it wouldnt so it just wouldnt run (crank crank crank but no fire), So i took this advice and ran a wire from the battery, hear it building pressure, crank it up, and it ran just fine... So what would be my next step? Is it still the fuel pump (it ran so why would it be that?) or a ground? or? I noticed when I cut the car off after running it this last time, and turned the switch to the lock position, then turn it back to the initial on position (but not cranking) the fuel pump built pressure but I noticed the gas gauge went waaaayy up like as if it were grounded or getting improper reading? (never did that before, but my oil pressure gauge is doing it as well/always has)

 

i would suspect the fuel pump relay. its under the footrest on the driver side floor. ill see if i can find a picture for ya. ok here it is

Thanks so much! I'm not trying to be thankful before the problem is fixed, but I have another 93 which is identical (3.4 v6 and etc) and I took the relay from it and put it on.. Fuel pump built pressure, it cranked up and ran, and from what I can tell it looks like the gas gauge went back to normal... My real test will be first thing in the morning im gonna try and start it.. if it starts (this would mean a 2 day period of running) I'm gonna say you were right and at this point I would be SO happy if that was the case.. I really reaaally didnt wanna do the pump or have to cut behind the back seat.. you are the shiz!
