Default Engine running rough / Won't idle

I have a 95 3.4L that I just put back together after replacing the head gaskets. It starts up but runs really rough and won't idle. Is there a chance the timing is off from having the timing belt taken off while doing the HG? Also smoke is pouring out the tailpipe. Any help?

First, the car has a timing chain, not a belt. What color is the smoke? If its white its oil, black is fuel. Yes your timing could be off, you dont't need to take the timing cover off at all to change head gaskets though.

What do you mean it wont idle? as in it wont stay quiet? is it rough as well? the timing shouldnt have anything to do with it if you fixed the gaskets. Check for a vacuum leak as they can cause concern for a bad idle

Did you properly adjust your valve lash? One thing guys do wrong is not adjust it after removing the heads. If it isn't adjust properly your car won't run properly and you run a risk of damaging yours valves and lifters.

Sorry drive belt...thought it was the same thing as a timing belt. But the smoke is white-ish gray and you can smell fuel...by not idling i mean not idling. I have to keep pumping the gas to keep it running, running rough at that. Does anyone know how to adjust the timing on a 3.4? I've only adjusted timing on engines with distributors and I can't really find any info online.
