Drivetrain noise on a 3.4
My 94 has been on the road for about 4 daysand I've put a few hundred miles on it withteh rebuilt engine and front suspension. From the first time I turned the key i thought "oh, that can't be right."
The problem is that it feels like the engine is bolted right to the frame. I've described it as coarseness and it feels like there are no engine mounts at all. Every bit of engine vibration is transmitted to the chassis and it is loud in the passenger compartment.
This type of noise has showed up on other cars when an exhaust pipe it touching the floor (aka grounding out) or engine mounts have collapsed and no longer provide vibration isolation.
A friend of mine had a girlfriend who bought several V6 Camaros and he said they were all awful from day one. I told him to sit in mine and start it and he said he already knew what I was worried about.
Other 3.4 owners, is this really the case? Is there a lot of engine noise transmitted to the passenger compartment? I was ready to buy new mounts, figuring that the 16 YO, 130k mile ones were shot.
When you brake torque the engine it barely moves! Like maye 1/4" at the upper intake. I know there's not a lot of clearance under the hood but that lack of movement makes me think there's a mount problem.
The engine is very smooth at idle but this noise is pretty bad.
Is this normal?

Yeah, will do!
I called my buddy at the GM dealership with the p/n for engine mounts. Not available! No superceded number either. Just plain no way from The General. I was really surprised.
Left and right mounts are the same for the 3.4 and the the 3.8 uses that same p/n on one side only through 2002! Hard to believe that it's not worth stocking the part for multiple years. OR maybe the warehoused stock sold out and it's not worth making another run.
The 94 I spotted in the U-Pull-It yard yesterday had the engine and trans removed so I could see the mounts. I unbolted both figuring that I'd give them a try since new ones aren't available from GM.
After looking at them closely I decided to pass. The rubber inner part kind of rattles around inside the steel shell and the bottom of the rubber is compressed and bulging out the end. I doubt they'd be any better than the ones I have in my car now.
