Bad brakes, check pads or shoes for wear, & check rotors or drums for warping, replace or reface as needed.

If you car shimmys when you brake it is almost certainly going to be your rotors or drums as pete said. If you rotors aren't warped or cracked then try to get them turned if there is enough "meat" left on them to be, same goes for your drums. Its cheaper to get them turned if you can than replacing them. Once you do that it would be best to get new pads/shoes. Try to avoid the pads/shoes with a lifetime guarantee because those will chew up your rotors/drums.

My car used to do that. I was missing the center mount to my 2 piece driveshaft. I went ahead and got a 1 piece driveshaft, but I still heard a similar noise. I found out one of my crossmembers was rattling against my exhaust pipe.

It could be a number of things, and to know what it is, you need to take it to a mechanic or find a buddy with a lift.
