That's what I was wondering. Mine's as early it gets for the fourth gens, I used synthetic with no additive either. Again, may be I got lucky, but that one instance revokes a "can't be used".

GM issued a technical bulletin adding modifier to the rear axle oil. This was done to quiet what we call a "Rusty Screw" noise that we heard in a very small percentage of vehicles. This does not happen in all cases, however to address owner's concerns we asked that the modifier be used in all instances to insure that the driver would not get this noise. When replacing the fluid it is at the owner's discretion whether or not to add the modifier. Elimination of the modifier does not affect durability of the differential."

That's fine and dandy. But I wasn't referring to the Torsen (which is what was used starting in the later 90's 4th gen's) because that's not a clutch type LSD.

Question

When you say it slips -- how do you notice this slip -- what are the symptoms?

It's hard to describe what I'm feeling when it happens, but when it does, it's generally after a turn. If I gas it hard, the rearend clunks, and I can feel it through the whole car. But right before it clunks, I get a split second sensation that something in back isn't grabbing. This isn't a differential play type of clunk either, it happens while under a load. Again, it's hard to describe. This can happen once a day, or once a week, and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's after a cold start or after a long drive.
