Cost for a engine change
i have a 98 with a 3800 series ii that is bad, I have found 2 2007 series iii engines out of Pontiac Grand Am's for $450.00 and $650.00 difference in price is milage. I can change over all the parts needed to make it a rwd engine, but can't do the engine change due to recently reinjurying my back. What should I expect to pay a shop for this work? Thanks for the help.

Most shops will not want you involved so it will be an all or nothing deal. I would estimate 12 hour to swap motors. I expect another 3 for switching everything over. I would guess 15-18 hours for the total job. So at this point you need to find out what is the "normal" labor rate in you area. My area is 75-125 per hour.
You are going to have a tuff time finding someone. First you have to find a shop willing to install a used motor, then you have to find one willing to install a used motor that their books say will not fit. There is no step by step instruction which means no Chiltons time. IF you can find a shop they are most likely going to charge you time and material. The only way I see a shop taking on this work is if you find one that has a 4th gen Camaro guru.
Sorry to hear about your back, crushed disks is why I stopped turning wrenches.
