You can check the cat out easily with some "old school trouble shooting". Attach a vacuum gage to a vacuum connection somewhere in the intake manifold. Turn on the engine & let it idle. On a basically stock engine, the gage should show somewhere between 14-22 inches of vacuum, and hold steady as the engine idles. If the vacuum starts droppingwhile the engine idles, it is an indication that back pressure is building up and that the PCM is trying to maintain idle speed by opening the IAC valve. The back pressure could be caused by a clogged cat, debris from a damaged cat blowing into the muffler and clogging the muffler, or a crunched up exhaust pipe.
The " new school way" is to do the same thing, by using a scan tool and looking at the output of the MAP sensor. The MAP will report Manifold Absolute Pressure which is the opposite of vacuum.

Well I thought everything was fine but now I am having worse problems. I have replaced egr valve, pcv valve, fuel filter, plugs&wires. Now I am having hp loss under load. Took it back to autozone. I now have the code for random cylinder misfire and p1406 EGR pintle posistion was 10% of the expected posistion. The guy at autozone was an f-body guy and said he had similar problem and suggested bringing in the coil packs and ignition control module for testing because they have a tendancy to become cracked and let moisture in. Anyone heard of this? Well I'm waiting for my tax return should be here this week so I can get another car as this is my only means of transportation.
Did you figure out what was the problem im getting the random missfire and p1406 mines a 96 camaro though please help it would be appreciated thx

I saw the date i have 20/20 and 50 inch screen so its hard to miss. I was replying to HeavyChevy77 because he has the exact problem then me so instead of throwing cash at something thats not the problem i figure why not ask him and save me the frustration and money. And thanks wayne242

im sure gorn went to his profile page and looked to see that heavychevy77 has not been on the site sence feb of 08. welcome to the forum and please sometime when you need help goin to sleep read the rules. soo clean the egr, to reset the computer and sensors unhook both the battery cables from the battery and after a minute or two touch the two battery cables together, leave them touching for a few minutes. before you do this make sure to unhook any aftermarket stereo equipment. hook the battery back up. this clears the computer and resets any sensors that can be. car will run a little funny till computer learns. enjoy the forum... and dates are hard to see on mine too, silver dosent seem to contrast enough with the black.
