Yea mine was doing that last week, i knew it was comming from the alternator it sounded almost like a berring was going out. So are you saying that it could be the battery that is going dead?

For a quick fix, just get a cold air intake (couple - few hundred bucks depending on where you get it) and cat back exhaust (you can find parts + installation for less than 500). That changes the sound drastically. As stated above, if you want to take it further, get headers and high flow cat.
