Ok so im new to Camaro's and I'm hopeing someone can give me so good input.Im generally pretty good with cars as is my dad who has about 12 cars at this point, but we just cant seem to figure this one out. I just bought a 97 CamaroRS 3.8l V6. Wewere able to get it started after the person we bought it from did something in the back to the security sensor and putting a new fully charged battery in it. It ran for a few minutes until we revved it up and it just shut off and hasn't started since. It turns over fine but it just wont start. The coil pack and ignition control module have both been changed and the fuel pressure is fine. It seems to not be getting any spark. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this (computer, security,the chip in the key)?

What does the Security light do while you're trying to start it?

 

Do you mean the one that says security on the dash? If so that goes out after the key is in the ignition for a few seconds.

Also, if thechip contactson the key are too worn and its not making contact would the engine still crank or would that just not do anything(I only have one key for it otherwise I would try another).

 

That's what I meant. If it stays on or flashes quickly, it's ususally a security system problem. All I can think of right now is to check all wires and sensors for damage. Maybe change out the plugs and wires. Perhaps the plugs were/are fouled.

 

Thanks for the help, Yeah I am planning on doing the plugs and wires as soon as i geta day off. Hopefully that will do it. I need to get a spare key made too so i'll be able to find out if that chiphas anything to do with it.

 

ok so we've changed the plugs and wires still no go. Also had the key tested at a dealer and they said the chip is still good. We think we've narrowed it down to either the crank position sensor or the computer. I bought the sensor for only $29 so hopefully that will fix it because i really dont feel like spending $120 on a remanufactured computer and then however much more it costs to get it reprogrammed. Just gotta rent a balancer puller and find more time to get that changed.

 

It's very rare for a PCM to go bad.

 

I have the same prob.. On a 93 3.4 CAMARO and it will not even crank. I got it to crank uesing the starter but it cutts right out,.,. The securitylite will not stop blinking on the dash, so if u can help Much THANK"S,.,.,..

 

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for awhile, reconnecting it, then starting it? If that doesn't work I would have the "chip" in the key tested.
