Yes you can take the engine from the top you have to take the top of the intake (plenum) off the motor in the car and all the accessories and radiator this will give you the room to lift and move the motor forward and you will have the room.
For a more detail on this method buy this book Hayes repair manual For 93 thur 2002 Camaro it is worth the money it explains the process in detail.
