I have seen those motors in the Olds Cutlass Supremes also, 93 was the last year? I am amazed I have not seen post about swaping one in a 93-95 F body.

The blocks have the same internal dimension as normal 3.4 but externally were designed for transverse mounting and do not have motor mount bosses, but use a bracket on the front cover to hold up the front, and the transmission to hold up the back. Dog bones attach the top of the engine to the front of the car to keep the engine from twisting under load. Because of the ovehead cam set up, the complete engine itself is much wider than a regular 3.4. I suppose all differences will make it a chore to squeeze it into an F body.
On a drag strip, the Grand Prix, which weighs close to a F body, was able to hit the low 90's MPH, but because of the front drive the ET's weren't all that great due to the front end unloading during hard acceleration.

My first car was a '94 Lumina Z34 with the DOHC 3.4. This was before I did much more than oil changes on cars, so needless to say as you mentioned about the engine compartment space Pete, my mechanic hated working on it.

According to Wikipedia, that engine was available till '97 on the Lumina and Monte Carlo.

I was doing contract work for GM when that 3.4 DOHC came out and I worked on a training program for changing the belt. What a freakin' nightmare. I think i have a copy of that program around here somewhere.

I remember how crammed that engine was under the hood and how huge the cylinder heads (and belt) were.

Wasn't the alternator water cooled on the W cars due to tight packaging. IIRC changing the alternator was a 5 or 6 hour job that involved removing or disconnecting the RH strut and partially lowering the engine cradle. We had a good laugh about that while working on the program.

I've seen a bunch of W cars with the 3.4 DOHC in the U-Pull-It yards. Another example of great when brand new but maintenance and repair costs send most example to the junkyard while the more pedestrian examples (3100 V6) soldier on for years afterward.

Yeah the engine got a lot of flack for how much maintenance required and the labor involved. I've seen a number of them in yards too.

All things said though, it was a great running engine as long as you kept it up. I've heard of a number of them hitting 200k or more. But for the hassle, you might as well have a 3800. Similar power and better MPGs.
