Exclamation acceleration problem.

I have a '94 chevy camaro 3.4L. Automatic.
When i try to accelerate its fine until i either press the accelerator down too far or i get up to around 55 mph. When i get there the RPM's drop and its hard to get past 55mph but when i do its smooth driving afterwards. I'm not car smart at all. Would it be electrical or mechanical? I really need help on this one.

If you step on the accelerator hard or fast. the transmission will usually downshift to increase acceleration and then upshift. Does your car have an overdrive selection? If so, use overdrive when you are going on the highway, it will engage 4th gear with it in OD.

I've had my car scanned for codes by my mechanic and none come up. My car is in overdrive all the time. I was told my transmission is going out. But is there something easier to do besides just go and change the tranny. Cause if its a smaller problem it would be helpful.
