98 camaro starter
My camaro starter is going bad, is it easy to replace by yourself.
My camaro is a base 98 with a manual transmission.
could someone post links or directions on how to do it.

Yes, it is an easy replace.
Block wheels and raise car with jacks.
Disconnect battery
On drivers side of engine, there is a heat shield that has 3 bolts that needs removed.
Once shield is removed, remove the 2 wires attached to the starter.
There are 2 bolts that hold the starter to the engine. Remove them and lower starter.

Not that I've done it but I've heard if you leave the heatshield off and run your camaro for so long on a hot day it's going to damage your starter due to extreme heat(in my 3.8 its right above an exhaust pipe thats going to be getting hot - I assume thats why the shield is there!!) By the way I read in some certain camaros you might have to pull an exhaust pipe off to get the job done.
Heres a question though - after you've got the starter hooked up you turn on your motor to hear a grinding sound as the vehicle starts meaning the gap between the flywheel/starter is too much how do you adjust that? I ask because mine's making that sound and apparently your supposed to put stick a screwdriver in a hole in the starter to adjust it which I tried but nothing at all was moving and I don't want to damage my new starter..?
Could someone explain how to adjust the starter's flywheel clearance a little bit for me??

What year model? I don't think the 96 and earlier have the starter heat shield. I may be wrong. The 96 we have did not have a heat shield on it when we removed the engine but the 98 does. If the starter is turning slower at running temp, I would think that it is a sign that your starter is getting weak and will soon need replacing. I would think that if the car had a heat shield on it and it has been removed, it would be best to get one back on it. As far as adjusting the bendix to engage the fly wheel, I have never heard of the adjustment you are referring to.
