3.4L V6 Camaro Top End Rebuild & Performance
#2
There is not alot you can do to the 3.4L to help. A CAI will be a good thing, forget the underdrive pulley they are a gimick more than a performance generator. Not sure if any one makes headers for that engine but if any one does it would be pacesetter, and just about any thing you do to the exhaust is going to sound raspy. Best I have heard so far is my friend's 3.4L that has a Z28 muffler and dual outs on it.

Well doing some more research I am just thinking about getting the k&n and getting a tuning. Should I buy the PCM tune program or take to local shop. I've never had anyone do a tune so not sure of the price difference.
Thanks for the info.

are you doing the intake gaskets yourself... if so you should dig a little farther and pull the lower intake and you could do a little port and polish just take some 120grit sandpaper and go inside the runners (pretty much anywhere you can reach on the inside) you want to almost polish it this will help the air to flow smoother (the weak point of the 3.4 is air exchange fresh air is restricted by the lower intake and the exhaust is constricted by the exhaust side of the heads)
Pacesetter Headers - UNCOATED 93-95 Camaro 3.4L w/o A.I.R. V6 701208
here are some headers for the 3.4 if you do these i recommend taking a dremel to open up the exhaust ports on the head (just make them the same size as the gasket and try to hold a vacuum close to suck up all the dust you dont want that in the engine)
also heres a vid of my 3.4 with a 3 inch flowmaster cat back with no cat

now i did all that work in about 3 hrs your not gunna notice huge power gains (you might make 20-30 hp with all this a cai and a full exhaust) but its deff noticeable i could burn second gear instead of just a chirp

BasicConcepts your car sounds awesome!
Oakley, a K&N CAI will cost you more than other brands. I'd check those out and save some $$$.
A PCM tune really isn't worth it in these cars however. Unless you want to tune stuff out like the EGR. The tune will mostly change your shift points at higher RPM's and on an old tranny it's not a good idea. If the car is standard then a PCM tune is completely useless.
I suggest getting a transmission cooler if your car is automatic. Do the coolant bypass so 180c coolant isn't flowing through your throttlebody. I have Pacesetter headers on my 3.4L and it made a big difference! Get a high-flow cat and a performance muffler too. Change your plugs and wires, get a 1-piece driveshaft, take the AC out for a bypass pulley too.

i think with out the ability to tune and take full advantage of them and the restrictions of the stock intake plenum it kills any really most preformace gains. It really sucks and im surprised no one hasnt come out with a better plenum design. i thought about designing one my self but to be honest i just dont have the know how and with out the tuning ability its kinda a lost cuase. I have heard of people using a adjustable FPR to help add more fuel.
im by far no expert on the 3.4 and i could have messed up my setup some how or there may have been a problem with the motor so take my post with a grain of salt.

For exhaust, do this! True dual 2.5" H-pipe with 3" Borla XR1 multi core racing mufflers. This will set you back about $700 but till be worth it!!! When I get some money bac after painting my car, I'm going to invest in this exhaust system.

On my car I have pacesetter ceramic coated headers to a high flow cat with a magnaflow muffler, and a SLP cai. You can't really tune the 93 3.4 without buying a chip burner and some other stuff. If I could redo my build again I would go with the 3400 top end swap, but I didn't really know too much about the swap to do it properly.
You can read through my thread if you would like. Here.
