Hey ya'll. I got a problem with my 3.4l v6 94' camaro. It starts good, but the problem is it smokes alot of smoke, and it runs really rich. And on top of that, it runs pretty rough. My RPM Guage says 600-800 RPM, but i know its messed up so I dont really know what its running. Is it the oxy senor gone bad or what? The car sat for a little over a year w/o being start until I bought it. So far I have replaced spark plugs, wires, egr tube (it was cracked), new oil, oil filter, and a new air filter. So what else is wrong and why would it be running rough? I have sprayed alot of places with Carb Cleaner to see if there was anymore leaks and there isnt...so now what? I took it to autozone and they hooked up their little computer crapo thing and it didnt do ****, and I can't get ahold of a GM tech 1 anytime soon...

 

What color is the smoke? Black & floats to the ground, Blue & billows in the air, white like steam.
Is the check engine lite lit?
If you know it is running rich, check the fuel pressure and pressure regulator, make sure the air filter is clean. Also the ECT sensor or the IAT sensor could be bad, and check the O2 sensors.

 

The check engline light comes on every 5 or so min, then goes off after a min or so. Everytime I start my car, wherever it sits, there is a black spot where the exaust was sitting, and a it smokes white. You can smell it burning alot of oil or fuel or something, the smell is pretty intense. Where are those senors at? And how do I know what to look for?

 

the o2 sensors are on the side of the headrs, it will look like a spark plug and have a wire sticking out of it, the white smoke ur talking about may mean the gasket seals are burn out. ull need to remove the intake manifold, both valves head, and the rail fuel injectors. its a lot of work cause unfortunately i had to do that at may house (could afford a mechanic so hired a family friend to do it for cheap with me and my dad to help),. it maybe other things perhaps pete could answer better, thats my input.

 

The car has over 184,400 miles on it...lol.

 

My friend siad the misfire might be caused by the coil packs...is that possible?

 

Misfire can be caused by ignition problems, fuel delivery problems, and mechanical damage. Yes, bad coil packs could cause the problem, and also the ignition control module, plug wires, and plugs. I am concerned; however, with the white smoke you mentioned, this could be a sign of coolant getting into the combustion chamber, indicating a bad gasket (head or manifold) or a cracked head.

 

I had a horrible misfire. I changed my coil packs and it was fine. (btw you can use a coil pack off of a lumina/ monte carlo with 3100v6) which are cheaper than asking a place for a camaro coil pack. I would reccomend seafoaming the engine, if you have any questions about seafoam I would be glad to answer them. It's a 100% pure petroleum, I recommend pulling out a major vaccuum line (brake booster works best) then with the motor running ( you will essentially create a MAJOR vaccum leak so RPm will be high around 3k) Slowly pour the seafoam into the funnel and it will slow the engine down you want to pour 1/3rd of it in very slowly, the the 2nd/3rd slowly then flood the engine causing it to stall out with the last 3rd of it. Let it set and soak for about 20 mins, (reconnect brake booster line) start the engine and it will smoke like the motor is blown all to hell, Don't worry seafoam is as safe to your engine as water is to skin... be prepared for ALOT of smoke let it run for about 10 mins then take it out for a spirited run to clean the rest of the seafoam outta the engine

 

Are you sure it was the coil packs? i.e. did you first try cleaning up the coil pack terminals from corrosion and get down to the shiny metal first? My guess is new coil packs are not always the answer -- need to try the easy stuff first...
