I've been in search hell trying to find out.


This is from craby's 93-02 GM Camaro parts manual pdf
#6 shows 2 pinion seals for the 2000 F-body:
1st Design is a 1 piece without triple lip
2nd Design...2 piece with triple lip

I'd prefer not to waste money buying both, as the one I don't use will be useless to me and cost more $ to return ship.
Q1: How can I find out which Design I have? Before I tear her apart
I tried calling my local Chevy dealer parts department, but after immediately being put on hold, then hung up on after 15 minutes...I called again and left a message...still no response.
I tried several sites with my VIN, including GM, but none of them even have my actual differential listed (or my Three Rivers one-piece steel driveshaft).

2000 with these RPO codes: GU6 (3.42), G80 (POSI), J65 (4 disc brakes), L36 (V6)

Q2:
Does pinion seal replacement require draining the diff? I'm thinking not, but asking because I have to replace a bad axle bearing on my rear passenger wheel (I'll be doing both sides with seals).

Do you have to order it online and shipped or can you just pull the old one out and go to your local NAPA to find a match?

 

She's my only transportation, so that's a no-go.
I keep wishing for a new one, so I could take my time with her, but I apparently haven't found the right star yet, lol.
And NAPA lists both types as "guaranteed to fit your car", so that's no help.

 

Well I'd just go to NAPA and get both then return the one you don't need.

Unfortunately, no parts stores in my area have either in stock; O'Reilly, AutoZone, Advanced Auto or NAPA...all require shipping.
But it looks like I can return the unused one to the store without paying shipping like at RockAuto.

only difference I can think of is the traction control rearend, it is different at the pinion so it may be it needs a different seal. maybe look at older model seals and see if they match up with one of these. if so it would be for non traction control. at least would be logical not necessarily the way it is...

Just posting this for others as I won't know which one I have until I pull her apart and I already ordered both seals, jic, and will return whichever one I don't use.
