Cool Upgrading Base Model

Hello everyone,
I was hoping you could all weigh in on this. My wife's Camaro (from college days) is sentimental and who cares about the blue book, we are keeping anyway....

So I want to upgrade the crap out of this thing and maybe make a track car out of it. Most of the performance parts I find out there are for the Z28 and not the Base 3.4.

So anyone have opinions on best (suspension sport/racing, supercharger??/ Brake system)

I am also really interested in replacing its transmission and I would like to get something modern (semi-automatic). Can't find a thing out there.

Any opinions on any of this would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance

Check out the FAQ in the V6 tech section. I would just leave it stock. The 3.4 is never going to be fast by anyone's standards. It is a very old design the head flow like crap just getting up to 200 hp is a huge project. You can spend a LOT of money just to get to where a 3800 V6 Camaro starts at HP wise.

Sorry for the bad news but we get new guys with 3.4 in here all the time that want to make their cars fast. So far the only ones that have done better than 14 second quarter mile have been by swapping in V8's. 14 second is right about where a mini van from 2006 would be.

If you really love the car and you want it to go fast think about swapping in the correct year LT1 350. Check out the project area, there are a couple of conversion threads over there.

I have to agree with Gorn. you can either go v8 or waste your money trying to get on the same level as the 3800. You can try and put a procharger system in place of your a/c if you really want to beef up your 3400. but I doubt it'll last long that way.

Don't see how quarter mile times come into play, since he said he might want to make it a track car, not a drag strip car. V6 cars are less nose heavy and will push less in the turns. And a car can handle a turn only so fast, v8 or v6.

Well with a v8 you will be able to push the car out of turns harder than with a v6. and more weight over the nose is probably better for a track car to keep the front tires planted, and the v8 only weighs around 100 pounds more.

Unless OP is very good with tools and has extensive technical knowledge. Sell the v6 and buy a v8 car. Trust me ive been there and done that.

Does anyone know how much lighter a iron 3.4 is than a LS1? On paper the V6 should handle better but using torque to shift the weight to the back could even things out.

The OP asked about a Super charger. The only reason I mentioned 1/4 mile is because that is the standard which most people talk about a cars power/weight ratio. Also a supercharger is kind of a 1/4 mile thing while a turbo is more of a track thing.

What Gorn said. Except that the things that would be worth doing to a 3.4L are suspension like shocks/sways/STB, tires and creature comforts like adding seat heaters...
