96 z28 convertible project
I got this very clean car from a friend of mine who unfortunately threw a rod (or two) through his oil pan 2 months before leaving the country. It has lots of upgraded aftermarket parts but im only planning on messing with the engine swap for now.
I purchased a used 5.7L Lt1 long block on CL for a very good price. Supposedly less than 100kmiles. I reckon it is from a 96 B body vehicle b/c it has the iron heads, says 5.7 driver side on back, has vented opti and a crankshaft position sensor.
If i'm right this should be a direct bolt on application. I'm however tempted to open it up and either rebuilt it completely or just transfer the aluminium heads, put fresh seals and call it a day. Time and $$$ will dictate what option i will choose. What does a rebuild including a new cam costs nowadays? Im just interested in stock numbers...

I don't know anything about engine work. I don't have the luxury of doing much to my car myself being in the city. Hopefully one day I'll have a house and can dive into my car like you guys. I would think the aluminum head swap would be a good idea. I don't know prices either but would love to see you build up the new engine to be beefier then stock. I wish you the best of luck and hope you post many many pictures as you do your build.

i rebuilt my LT1 with a 383 stroker kit, rotating assembly was 850$, cam and valve train was 450$ and machining on the block was 150$ (i know the machinist so he hooked me up) i ran stock fuel.

With any used engine, it's always a good idea to open it up and see what it looks like. I would take the heads off and look at the pistons/walls and see what they look like. If they are good, then swap the heads. Take the oil pan off and look at the bottom end, if good then seal it up. Rebuild prices are going to depend on the area and the shop you go to. Could be a $500-2000 range for just a basic rebuild depending on above reasons.
