I'm not seeing where the sealing ring failed at all. Are those cracks possible from when you lifted the gasket off, it looks like it got bent in a few places. Still, with all that build up of crud, it wouldn't surprise me if corrosion between the deck and gasket could have contributed to a leak.

Remember you can't get your gasket surfaces too clean. Scrape, sand, vacuum and flush. Rinse and repeat!

It's not uncommon at all for coolant to go down into a cylinder when you remove the heads. Is that all you were reefering to, or is there something more that the blurry pic doesn't show?

Sorry about the blurry pic. iPhone is all I have to post with lol. It was just water in the cylinder. Didn't know if that should worry me or not lol

Not at all, its common for water to run into the motor when you're pulling the heads off

Okay good. So far no signs of cracks! I'm gonna take some carb cleaner to the heads later with a wire brush and clean them up real good. I get off work at 9:00pm so I'll clean them up when I get home and let you guys know if I find any other damage lol

From what I can see on the block it looks like the gasket failed on Drivers side front (#1 I think) at the 1:00 position looks failed to me and on the #2 at the 11:00 postition was about to fail but had not quite got there yet. I would say that was prolly caused by the head bolt in between the 2 positions was not doing the job it was made for. Good call on getting the new bolts!
