Water Pump replacement cost
Hey I just got my dream car a 1997 camaro z28 6 speed and right when i get it home the water pump goes bad.. I take it to what I thought was a pretty fair shop from the past and after an inspection they say it will cost $820 bucks to replace the water pump and hoses including labor and the parts. I know that with these cars its extremely hard to get down there and do the work, but I think that I am getting ripped off here. How fair is this guys price?
Also, i'm debating to replace the distrubutor and spark plugs while hes down there too but not sure of how soon it needs to be done. Its got 98k miles and normally I would do it all myself but i'm still working on my 88 camaro trying to get one of them on the street.
Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds a little high but about $300 in parts and antifreeze, maybe more depending on where they buy them. They are probably quoting the man hours of labor according to service book. I have learned to not even think about the price anymore until I get the quote, that way, I'm not nearly as shocked!

Well it should cost more like 5 or $600. The distributor (optispark) is a lot deeper in there and will cost a lot more. If you do put in a new optispark, get the MSD. Replacing your own waterpump isn't too hard if you have some knowledge on it. Optispark is a total bi#^%

$820 you can get
new waterpump $145ish
optispark- summit, jegs, accel or partsladi $260 ish
coolant $20
new hoses $30
thermostat $10
spark plug wires jegs 8.5mm $40
spark plugs $16
new belt $30
cold air intake on Ebay with K+N filter $50
and still have over $200 to buy the tools and Haynes manual if you don't own any

i would say that is a bit high for just a water pump. have u had the work done yet. i can change the opti and water pump in a few hours. its not that hard if u have the tools. balance puller is the gotta have. now a oil pan gasket, thats a real pita. a good water pump from summit is 196. and a acdelco performance opti is 310. gm no longer makes the performance opti acdelco does with the same part #, msd opti is is not sold by summit for a 97. dont mess with the ceap stuff on this job. so for good parts u could get both for a little over 500. doin yourself.
