Default VATS issue on 98 Z28

This is the second time I have encountered this problem. The first time around 3-4 years ago..... I went on and paid the GM people to fix and it was over $300. I don't know what they fixed on it but I think it was the ignition cylinder. This time I want to troubleshoot it first and see if I can get the job done. I will try and include as much info as possible so hopefully we can narrow it down. The car will not turn over. The fuel injectors sound like they're activating. I do have the security lights on both the dash (red flashing) and yellow "security" on the cluster. When you get in the car and try to start it, you have the security light on. After a few minutes it will go out but still no cranking and the light re-illuminates. Red security light does as follows: Door locked.......... red light on solid. Door unlocked....... red light off. Door open........ red light blinking. Ignition activated...... red light blinking. I have tries the "3 times reset", unplugged the battery to reset, sprayed the ignition tumblers with air, and still nothing. I bypassed the chip on the key (#7 - 1.870 ohms) and still no help. What is next? Do I have to get intothe control module? If so can I just replace it or does something have to be programmed or resetby GM. I've read something about a VATS module?I appreciate any help with this problem!!!

Thanks for the reply Camaro69. Unless I'm reading it wrong, all it's doing is telling me to bypass the system like I already mentioned I did. I built a unit and spliced it into the wires leading to the key cylinder. I matched the resistance to my key (1.870) and connected it to the wire I cut on the computer side (not the key side). Does this unit do anything else??

The VATS function for your car is incorporated into the BCM (Body Control Module) which monitors and controls just about anything not involved with the power train and brakes. Could be why the light changes with the doors opening and closing. The BCM lives under the passenger side of the dash in a holder attached to the AC ductwork.

When you bypass it with a resistor, does the Security light stay on?

Yes the security light stays on. The only time it is off is when the door is closed. When closed and locked...... slow flash. Door open or when key turning over....... fast flashing. Should I change-out the BCM Z28 man??

May have to, but it is pretty expensive. There are tests that can be run on it, if you have the proper scanner, such as a GM Tech 2. Also a new module has to be programmed to the key, and it can only be programmed once. If you mess up you need a new one.
