i remember the old 50s impala taillights would do strange stuff looking for a ground.

OK Guys, it's working, at least for today. I replaced the bulb a second time and all is good. Thanks for all the info. Now on to fixin' the mirrors. Both will move in and out but neither will move up. A few meter probes should point this one out.

Again thanks for all the help.

Glad you got it fixed. Its been my experience that lighting systems issues are rarely factory wiring issues. Rusty sockets, bad or defective bulb, bad grounds and of course an human getting in there to "fix" anything is the most common cause of a failure.

Anytime we got a car in with wiring issues and the dash and trunk where already ripped a part you knew it was going to be a long day. Hey the repair for the actual problem was $52 for a new bulb socket. It will also cost you $275 to fix all the wires you cut up trying to fix it.
