stalls out at 1/3 tank of gas
99 3800 v6 191,000 miles
So first off let me just say that My cars gas gauge hasn't worked for about 3 years. It works when i'm between 1/2 tank and full but once I get below 1/2 tank It just registers full therefor I determine how much gas I have based on mileage and not my gauge. My fuel economy has gone way down ever since I got a "camshaft position sensor A circuit range / performance bank 1 or single sensor" Code. I get about 18 MPG when i used to get 25.
The major problem I'm facing now is that When i gas is at about 1/3 tank (i know this because My tank holds about 16 gallons) My car has less power and it kinds sputters when driving as if Each stroke isn't getting enough gas. The first time it happened i went straight to the gas station and filled up. This last time I ended up on the side of the road with a "reduced engine power" light and had to call a tow truck. I figured It couldn't be gas because i knew i had a 1/4 tank (I did, It only took 12 gallons to fill it up). I checked the fuel pressure with my gauge and i have 50psi when i turn the key and 42psi when the car is running which the book says is within range. I've replaced the fuel filter about 50,000 miles ago without provocation.
has anyone experienced this or have any troubleshooting suggestions? Thank You

have you tested fuel pressure when car will not run. i would say it has something to do with the fuel pump. either sucking air or pump motor is overheating once the fuel level is low enough to expose the pump and shutting down. the fuel works as a coolant. also sounds like someone has already done something in the gas tank, the fuel level sensor is not working correctly, i would think they replaced the fuel pump. if a cheap one was used then it is probly failing. pull the carpet up in the back hatch area and see if theres a hatch cut there to access the pump.
