Default 98 3.8 Issues

Took it for its first drive today, and ran into a few issues. Going down the road I had a loud clicking noise (Pretty sure I got that covered) and In Park, Neutral, or it seems drive the engine won't go above 4k. Whenever I go I feel down on power and it backfires quite a bit. Only code thrown is a Mass air flow. Would this be a huge cause to both these problems? Generally MAF is cause to hard starts and stalling.

Mass air flow sensors job is to tell the computer how much air is entering the motor. If that is not working right it will cause a drop in HP.

A dead MAF in that engine could cause the computer to put the engine in "Reduced Power Mode" which is enough power to get to 30-35 MPH but that is about it. It is there because the computer does not have enough info to properly tune the engine and it falls into a preprogramed map that will allow the engine to run but only enough to get to the shop or off the road.

Look at your mass flow sensor. It's easy to remove. If the wire inside is black, it needs to replaced or cleaned.

I haven't tried it but I was told carb cleaner will also clean the mass flow sensor wire.

Do not use carb cleaner. By design carb cleaner leave behind a oily residue, this keeps the moving parts like the choke in working order and it will kill a MAF sensor. They make MAF sensor cleaner. It is basicly electrical connector cleaner that leaves no residue.

Normal dirty MAF sensors do not set MAF codes.
