Just found this: Shifter **** Adapter
Now I see what they're doing. The adapter attaches to the center plunger rod with a set screw, and the bottom opening of the adapter is big enough to slide down over the shaft. Pretty simple really, once you see a picture.

 

Ah, got ya. The one I found is much cheaper. Now my secret is out

I had that Hurst shifter on a Firebird I bought, I HATED that thing...lol. They had epoxied it onto the shaft, I ended up cutting it off with a hacksaw and putting a nice leather one on it. MUCH better feel!

 

Haha yeah, I'm not a fan of the Hurst. I don't think it would be comfortable for me. That's why I searched for a carbon fiber/leather one.

I have always wanted a different shifter setup in my A4 2000 & this thread literally inspired me to do something about it.

So, last night I ordered a billet aluminum brushed finish ball **** w- "Z28" engraved into the top in the same style font as the Z28 emblems on the front fenders. I ordered the adapter & I went down to this leather place in Salt Lake & got a really nice piece of automotive grade leather in very dark charcoal/ebony to match the rest of the interior. I also got some very heavy duty thread in Charcoal Grey for the stitch work.

Then I ordered an OEM GM Shifter panel (from the ashtray to the cup holder)

I am going to use the original one in the car as my prototype template so I can create a wider base for the leather boot & still incorporate the (P,R,0D,D,2,1) gear indicator window.

I have a friend that installs car stereo/automotive entertainment systems for a living & he is going to help me fabricate a base plate which will also get the leather traetment.

I will definetely post a new thread w- some pictures for anyone interested in a mod like this.

I bought enough leather to try a couple different shift boot patterns & to wrap the base plate surround.
