Unhappy rpm/power problem

i have a 98 v6 3.8 camaro and I'm having problem with power and rpms. when I'm in gear my car will only accelerate to 3500 rpms and then no more power will be given to the car, I'm getting the code p0420(catalytic efficiency below threshold) and i don't know if i should replace the cat, or if it would be better not to have a cat at all. or if that is what the problem is?

if i were you id pull the front o2s and see if the problem goes away (this will test weather the cat is clogged or not) if it gets better replace the cat... if not you have an o2 problem

wow,,, not easy to find a shop that will take a cat out and not require you to replace it.
