Default Replacing Fuel Pump

I have a 1995 Z-28 convertible, 6 speed transmission, that may need a new fuel pump. If you bang on the fuel pump with a heavy object while attempting to start, sometimes it will start/run. How can I determine if it's a fuel pump or other fuel system part that's failing? Also, I'm moderately skilled at working on cars and was wondering if replacing the fuel pump would be a major job or if it's do-able in a day.
