Thumbs up Rear End Questions???

Hey guys,
Just working on my sons 2002 SS, making my stock 04 Vette wheels fit and thought that I would check on his rear end to see if it had posi. I had it to the dealer once and on the computer, it said previous owner had rear diff replaced. So I read that you jack up the rear, spin tires and if one wheel goes in one direction and the other wheel goes another direction, then you Don't have posi. I check and sure enough the wheels spin in different directions. So, I figure the guy replaced posi with a standard unit until I have my son give it the gas in an abandoned school parking lot. Then I see TWO tires go up in smoke! What gives, I thought that it didn't have positraction because of the wheels spinning differently? Can somebody clarify this for me? Thanks again to the Forum members...

the 2002 does not have the standard type of posi in it. It is more of a locking diff than a clutch type posi. You also have to remember that if you have enough power you will spin both wheels posi or not. My 2nd car was a 66 Mustang GT that spent most of its life at the 1/4 mile. The guy that raced it put a 52 Ford 9.25 pickup rear end in the car and I had some nasty 4.11 gears. I could get down the 1320 in 13.6 with a 289 4bbl and when ever I wanted I could bake both rear tires in 1st and 2nd and a good squawk into 3rd with 4th gear not making noise but kicking you in the seat still. There were no locking or posi in that rear end, just 4 spiders, one ring and one pinion. The best way to tell if your rear end is a Zexel or Posi is to remove the cover and look. The car should have the Zexel Torson rear end in it.

its prob got the Zexel torsen type posi, which is a torque biasing until rather than the clutch type (auburn)

if you want to do any reading just search zexel torsen, however as massey said you dont need a posi to spin both wheels so pulling the cover would still be the only way to be sure,

Yeah, I had a kid in my class argue with me about that saying that if the wheels spin in opposite directions that it won't spin both tires simutaniously. But yeah it does, very well I might add lol! And just a pointer next time, spin the driveshaft instead of the wheel. It will spin both tires if you just spin the shaft. In nuetral.
