Overdrive Acceleration
#14
i am with specter, before this guy, i never even knew that manual transmission associated with OD. Over Drive is usually for automatic car. My pathfinder has 1-2-4 cirlce D and that is my overdrive. I have a button if I want to shut it off.
But yea guess you never stop learning

In a manual transmission your 1:1 drive is your strongest (In your case 4th gear). So if you are going to punch it by all means drop it in 4th. 5th gear is by no means weak and it can handle a pounding it just 4th can handle more.
Back in the 80's when automatic overdrives first came out (700R4 and 2004R) GM recommending not using overdrive for towing cause it could cause the transmission to overheat. The facts where more like the torque converter clutch could not handle it more then the transmission. By the end of the 80 GM had it pretty much all figured out. This left many people to believe all over drives where just for crusing on level roads.

In the repair manuals the gear that makes the output shaft turn faster then the input shaft is a Overdrive. Hence the name "Over and Drive" or over driven gear. Does not matter if its a automatic or manual.

I've driven manuals with overdrive for over 25 years now ever since my 79 Celica. the last gear is generally lower than 1:1 and is for fuel economy. If I've slowed down to 45mph and don't need to get up and go you just stay in gear and it takes longer to accellerate.
Thnik about those who have autos with OD. If you are driving 45 mph, you're probably in OD and if you push the pedal down slowly, it won't downshift.
If you go too slow in the wrong gear, and push the gas pedal to the floor, and are running too low an octane fuel, you could start to detonate which is not good for the engine.

oh damn.... I missed that part. that is fail
for the manual, dont worry about anything. only time you will hurt things is if you are letting the RPM drop below 1k and trying to use 5th to bring it back up. you can go WOT in 5th all day as long as its at a decent rpm
