Default Overdrive transmissions ?

hi, I have a 67' currently running a th400 with 3.73 gears. So, I would like to install and overdrive transmission. The engine is a stroker 454 dyno'ed at 625 hp & 640ft/lbs. I like the gearvendors and usgears od units but they're a bit pricey, bteracing has 700r4's and 4l60e's for half the price or maybe a 4l80e? Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks, landon

Here check out this article http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...ive/index.html I think this explains what is involved with swap. if you go with a electronic trans ,you will need to buy a controller for it also.

With that much torque, I'd go with the 4L80E if you go that route. I went through 2 4L65E's in 700 miles with a relatively stock LS3 in my 69 Camaro. The 80 has held up GREAT though. I am running the TCI controller as well with no problems. I got the 80 from a junk yard of all things as well, so it only cost about $1K for the trans/computer/driveshaft... The only "smart" purchase I think I've made.

Ahem, in addition to the 69 Camaro, of course!

anything newer than the 700R4, you're going to have to get a computer also. it might be worth completely pricing out all your options and see how they stack up once everything is included

with those types of numbers, I'd be afraid of a junkyard tranny

With the torque you are making the 4L80E is the best option. You will destroy any 700R4 / 4L60. A 200-4R like they use in the Grand National can be built to handle a lot but you may be beyond it's capability too.

You can cut the cost of the transplant a bit by going with a full manual valve body conversion. No expensive transmission control computer to deal with but you have to manually shift every gear all the time.

The 91 to 93 GM diesel trucks had a stand alone transmission controller that can be used to retrofit the 4L80E and maintain full automatic functions.
