Default Oil pressure guage or a problem?

K, so I bought a 98RS not too long ago, and sent it in for it's first oil change. The oil pressure gauge was a little high little over 60 psi at full operating temp idle, I got the car back this morning and now it's full on past 120! I picked it up from the mechanic this way. The shop was closed when I picked up my car, so I can't ask them about it till Monday and it's driving me crazy! The car runs amazing quiet and smooth, so I am hoping it's not a huge problem. I know not too much about cars, lady driver....Any advice?

More than likely the switch or the gauge itself is faulty. That or your car has one high pressure pump and some tight bearing tolerances! But more than likely it's the switch/gauge. Can have the shop put a mechanical gauge on to double check the oil pressure.

I would bet that the mechanic disturbed or broke the connector on the oil pressure sensor. It is right above the oil filter on the front of the engine. This photo shows a 2002 engine but it is almost the same as yours.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I took it back in today, and they said it didn't look like the oil sending unit had been disturbed, but the went ahead and manually checked the oil pressure and it's fine. So, I guess it's just the sending unit that went bad. I believe they put 10W30 valvoline in the car and a standard generic oil filter. That's what the invoice says. I appreciate the advice, as I have just come off of a mechanic absolutely destroying my last car, and hence why I ask so many questions. Goes to show you can't always trust a "reputable shop."

ultra cheap fram filters will go to pieces and plug things up can cause loss of pressure or high pressure depending on where it plugs
