So for Christmas I'm going to finally get myself a decent but cost efficient scanner, from what I've heard and seen, the AutoX-Ray is a safe bet. I have a 1995 Camaro, Here's what I'm looking at-

I noticed the scanner description says it has OBDII codes already stored, what about OBDI? Would I have to purchase new software for it? Any assistance is appreciated.

 

If you get that one let us know how it works. I have yet to find anything that will let me look at Anti-lock brake or air bag codes in my 96 that does not cost a couple of grand.

With the stored codes I think they mean they have a description of the code with the older stuff your going to just look it up to see what the code would mean. OBD2 is kind of standardized across the manufactures but ODB1 and back the maunfucture codes are all over the place.

 

Alright man, I'll let you guys know. I'm just tired of my rough idle,around 1.1k RPM and the I can feel the car shake, I replaced the fuel filter,fuel pump, new plugs and wires, new alternator, new tensioner, new battery, new cat, new exhaust, cleaned the IAC and TB, new intake, and ran seafoam through the fuel lines, crank case, and brake booster. The idle has gone down a bit to a little under 1k and it still slightly shakes. An SES light popped up a couple days ago so IM PRAYING its something simple. I called every autoshop in a 50 mile radius and either noone has the adapter for my year Camaro, or theirs is "S***"-I was literally told that by a mechanic.

 

I've a 95 Z and use the Actron 9145. That is not a cheap scanner but it supports OBD1 and 2.

It's been superceded by a newer unit which has graphing.

Do you miss/surge all the time or just when low idle?

 

Usually just low idle, when I accelerate I dont feel the shaking, I might order a new IAC, I cleaned mine but its still fouled on the lower coils that I couldnt get to, could that be a culprit?

 

Slightly higher idle and shaking? sounds like a small vacuum leak. When lazy IAC cause high idle it does not normal cause a vibration since the air source is from a central location. Vacuum leaks from hoses and intake gaskets tend to cause vibration because they supply way too much air to one or two cylinder and EFI just sees lean and adds fuel to everything.

Once you hit the throttle there is less vacuum so even less air is leaking into the intake and the motor is using a lot more air so the air fuel ratio of the effected cylinders is no where near as bad off idle.

 

Ive come down to that, I just seafoamed the brake booster line and smoke came out from just to the right of the computer under the hood. Which leads me to believe a line was pulled out from the dash,here's what happened a couple months back-
My A/C didnt blow from the dash, I checked the vacuum lines next to the computer and yanked on one and I felt it give and now its farther out. I semi-panicked and tried to push it back in, but with no avail. I replaced the vacuum check valve and now the lines kind of pertrude out and I have to tuck them back.. Did I pull a line out?

I'll check it out tomorrow, thanks for the input Gorn. Ordering the scanner tomorrow.
