Default obd 2 question for 95 camaro

hello, I have a 95 camaro that has the obd plug that sits by your right knee if your behind the wheel.I have a check eng light and I'm trying to figure out the codes. Like I said it has the obd plug and my obd2 scanner plugs in and powers on when plugged in, but says check connection every time. the emissions sticker under the hood doesn't say anything about it being obd compliant. The book I have says some 94 and 95 vehicles will have the plug but not be compliant.. I thinkthat is the problem, I'll use this obd2 scanner on other vehicles but I dont want to spend anymore money on this gripe until I'm sure I have it narrowed down to one scanner. which scanner do I use .? thanks Bob

If you look at the emissions sticker under the hood it should say in the lower left corner if the car is OBD I or II equipped. My 95 z28 is OBD I equipped- or at least the sticker says so.

Your car has a OBDI computer but a OBDII diagnosticconnector. You need to use a OBDI scanner with an adapter. Check the link below to see how to make up a homemade adapter.

Is using that homemade adaptor the only way to pull the codes, or is there an actual adaptor piece I can buy?

Some scanners come with cables already made up, others could reconfugure themselves automatically using tha car's VIN. Check with the scanner company to see if they offer a cable.
