Hi all. I have a '95 3.8L and I have been having trouble with it lately. It first started off with it hard to start. Would crank for 10 seconds before turning over but would fire right up if I cranked it again. Now it will not idle at all I took out the IAC and cleaned it and now when I start it up it revs to 3,000 rpm then dies. Am I looking at a bad IAC or could it be something else. I do have "service" light on but that was for a tranny slip and I haven't had time to take it to get the codes pulled again. Thanks for the insight.

 

Check codes. Sounds like a vacuum leak, or bad compression

 

could also be the fuel pump is going bad and when you cleaned the iac it was not happy and died. check the fuel pressure and get a new iac or have this one tested.

 

TO me the hard starting sounds like the fuel pressure regulator or a dying fuel pump. I have experienced that on my wife's 02 Alero, new FPR and it got better new FP and the car started normal. The high idle then death sounds like a bad IAC to me.

Well I just put the new IAC in and no luck Haven't been able to get a hold of my buddy that has the fuel pressure tester. Guess thats the next step

Well I think I just fixed the fuel pressure problem. Changed the fuel filter and the pressure went up. And the 3,000 rpm thing was the TPS and that is fixed. But it is still dying after running for about 30 seconds or so. idles normally then just slowly dies out. My best guess now is a vacuum leak. There is a preformed plastic hose going from near the IAC to the left bank fuel pressure line. Looks like it has some cracks but not sure what it is called.

 

replace everything that looks weathered that will save you an *** load of time i do that every time i buy a car new hoses all around, plugs wires, cap rotor, oil, filters everything that can be done to try to prevent stupid problems

 

did you run a fuel pressure test on it yet? the hose goes to the fuel pressure regulator. when you do a running fuel pressure test the pressure will go up and down with the rpms. well thats if the fpr is working correctly. if you unhook the vacuum line you speak of the pressure should go up to 43(i think) and stay. if not fpr is not working correctly.
