Default New to site just bought a camaro for my daughter looking for advise and tips

New to site, but thought it would be helpful.
I just bought a 1999 V6 automatic for my daughter.
She is turning 16 in May and has an interest in working with me on customizing and making the car unique to her style.
This is the first camaro i have bought and don't know enough about them to jump in head first let alone teach her without a little help from those who have been there and done that.
Car is in good running order, but there are a few things that need to be addressed before we jump into the good stuff.
1. it has an aftermarket stereo that is a nice one but there is a short somewhere in the wiring (it shuts off from time to time while driving) i need to remove it to get to the wires. What is the best course of action to do so.
we are going to take a good look at some things we need to start on this weekend like seat repair or replace (suggestions) and the center arm rest is starting to lift (better to repair or replace).
Any help or advise would be appreciated.

hay welcome to the forum. being your thread is more of a 4th gen question i have moved the thread to the 4th gen general section for you. please do a intro again if you like. i would first go through the brakes, front suspension/steering, charging system and double check tires. have the computer scanned for trouble codes at a local parts store, that should give you an idea if anything in the diagnostic system needs to be dealt with right away. the stereo problem could be the bcm acting up. there is a fix if thats the issue, in the how to and faq sticky at the top of this section. ahh here it is, number 11 on the list https://camaroforums.com/forum/93-02...62/#post557634

Thanks for the tip about the radio craby. We will try that this weekend as our first project.
I have had the car gone through had to have the cam sensor and a brakes replaced. Mechanically this car is sound it was a one owner. The work that needs to be done is cosmetic that's why i thought it would be a good dad/daughter project for her to learn and get her hands dirty which she is excited about. You said i might need a new intro being in a different section of the forum? I would like to post pics of our progress as well how do I do that

My car had an aftermarket radio when I bought it also. It was very static-y. It turns out that the wiring harness adapter was installed very poorly and one of the wires was touching bare metal causing the static. Once I took out the aftermarket and put in an OEM, all was well (and I got my steering Wheel controls back)

To access the radio is very easy. With the engine off, put the car in the lowest gear possible. Grab the bezel surrounding the radio and gently pull it off. It is attached by spring clips that will come off with just a little bit of force. The top vents come out at the same time, so do not be surprised. Disconnect any switch wires and you should have easy access to your radio.

As far as your center console cover. Those are often damaged during theft, so the replacement costs are VERY high. (Since insurance companies normally pickup the tab) I think something crazy like $350 from the dealer. If you could find someway to clean up your old one, you might be better off financially. The 97-2002 cover differs from the 92-96 ones.

what part of FL?

the most important thing is to be sure the car of our babies have good brakes, tires and shocks. Brakes are inexepnsive for these cars at the local parts store and you can slap on some new rotors and pads for not a lot of money.

Tires can be tricky depending on what size the vehicle has. In FL you do not want to buy performance or "summer tires" because you'll be lucky to get 5k miles from them. With the summer rains we get here you don't want your new driver hydroplaning

Hello Camaro enthusiasts. First off thank you for all your suggestions and tips. My Dad just bought me a Camaro that runs really well just is kinda bad cosmetically is kinda bad. I mentioned to him that I want to put new rims on it. It has brand new tires and just has regular silver hubcaps on it. It also seems that it was painted after it was bought originally because you can see some paint drip. It has a horrible after market sticker looking thing along the bottom of both sides. And we don't wanna risk peeling off the paint. And tips on how to safely peel off a sticker like that? Or should we just bite the dust and get the whole car re-painted?
