What he is saying should work. I assume pop off is push start or jump start it. The effect of installing a good dead battery in a running car should just be the altenator would full field. If its stalling you have either altenator issue or the battery is shorted internally. Taking a new battery charging it up for the first time then letting it die and storing it dead is not good.
In the future assuming you do not have a charger use a set of jumper cables and "charge" the dead battery with the cable. 10-15 minutes will get you enough of a charge to start the car that way you can switch batteries with the car off.

lol i love the south jokes im actually from NY i hate these accents is way too annoying ive been here since march my car is actually still registered in ny
anyways popstart push it down the rd and then put it in second gear starts right up (i know not a good idea) but i was the only one home and i had to work in the morn also the newer dead battery didnt have enough life to run my fuelpump or get the comp ready for the start thats why i tried changing it with the car running and i didnt know it could fry something thats how i charged the batts on my atv (i had had multiple batts and a powerdrain on the wheeler somewhere) but i guess the atv doesnt have quite the same electrical setup

On a newer car, it may mess up the catalytic converter or other things. A dead battery won't run a car like ours with alternators, an alternator requires an electrical current to make a charge, so if the battery is dead it wont have the required voltage to make that charge.
Ahhhh, "popstart"! We always called it push start. I thought you were using some southern term for jump starting the engine. Push starting is ok....as long as the engine starts by the time you get to the bottom of the road or hill. Otherwise it's a harder push back home.
