"Here, hold my beer while I change the battery". That's how it happens!

It's usually preceeded by something along these lines...

"Hey y'all...watch this..."

What he is saying should work. I assume pop off is push start or jump start it. The effect of installing a good dead battery in a running car should just be the altenator would full field. If its stalling you have either altenator issue or the battery is shorted internally. Taking a new battery charging it up for the first time then letting it die and storing it dead is not good.

In the future assuming you do not have a charger use a set of jumper cables and "charge" the dead battery with the cable. 10-15 minutes will get you enough of a charge to start the car that way you can switch batteries with the car off.

Default Pop starting

On a newer car, it may mess up the catalytic converter or other things. A dead battery won't run a car like ours with alternators, an alternator requires an electrical current to make a charge, so if the battery is dead it wont have the required voltage to make that charge.

Ahhhh, "popstart"! We always called it push start. I thought you were using some southern term for jump starting the engine. Push starting is ok....as long as the engine starts by the time you get to the bottom of the road or hill. Otherwise it's a harder push back home.
