I be cornfoosed. "when i went to put the new battery in it stalled my car". Was this battery swap being done while the engine was running?
You have a new but dead battery lying around. How long ago was it new?

More then likely that batter needs to have a deep charge put on it so its not geting enough power thru the system

Oops! Does the car not run now? Battery cranks it over, but no fire? Or is the battery still dead?

Explain "popping". Y'all are using a different term than us Yanks are accustomed to. So it's ok then? Btw, it's not a good idea to run the engine without having a battery connected.
Too many electronics in the car where a voltage spike could fry something. Electrical charges and shorts generally aim for the most expensive part first!

you may have burned the alternator up. you can fry the voltage regulator unhooking the battery when the motors running. a alternator will not run a car on a completely dead battery, unlike a generator the alternator needs to have a small amount of volts to to charge. im surprised it didnt die right away. so charge the battery up and test the alternator.

Charge the battery till it pops, or use the charged battery to pop the alternator? I had a battery pop once & it went on fire. I am sooo confused... However; changing batteries while the engine is running has to be a tar heel thing, maybe too much beer on a hot day.

That's North Carolina (Tar Heel) and no...we wouldn't change batteries while it's running.
