Default Ignition??

I have a '96 Camaro automatic. A few months ago it decided to stop running on me and now I'm trying to get it moving again. When i try to start it, the security light comes on I went to a dealer and they said it was probly the igntion cylender and that it would be a $400 repiar. Well i think I should be able to do it for much cheaper. Im wondering if anyone has done this and if they could give me some advice. I own a copy of the Tare down and rebuild for the modle of my car but thought it might be a good idea to ask this forum befor i attempted it. In short can anyone give advice for replcaing an ignition cylender????

gotta be easier than changing plugs. have u scanned/had it scanned for trouble codes? do you have an extra ignition key u can try to see if the chip on the key is bad? they make a bypass for the sec system. 60 bucks at ecklers but u need to know the key code.

o u said cyclender. its kinda easy the main part is remeber what screws go where. take off the steering wheel, need to remove the lock plate, then take of the blinker assembly and the lock is held on by 1 torque screw.

I just had the same experience. Chevy dealer told me that it was not the key because the key read to easily in the device the dealer has to check them. He said he could sell me the cylinder for around $80 then I would have to pay $30 to have a key made for that cylinder. I decided to go to another dealer and he told me the key did not read when he first tried it but the second time it did. I had him cut me a new key and the car has started every time since. I ohmed out my original key and get 0 unless I squeeze on the chip then I get a reading. Take your registration with you if you get a key cut, the dealer would not cut me a key unless I had photo ID and registration.
