Default How do I replace the rear hatch supports?

A while ago I noticed my hatch was starting to close on its own. Not long ago I opened the back up and it was really hard to lift and once I let it go, it fell back closed. So I assumed I needed new supports. So I bought some, but I'm confused on how to install them. The part that attaches to the hatch I understand, what I don't get is the end that attaches to the car. It looks like it needs to be unscrewed or something, but there's a huge star patterned hole in the center. The biggest bit I have is a T40, but that's too small for it. The instructions on the back of the new supports are confusing and aren't clear at all. All it says it to unscrew or pry off a retaining clip. Any input on this? It really frustrated me and I gave up on it for today.

Yeah, it's suppose to be a bolt I guess, I just don't know how to get it out.

From what I can tell a T47 & ratchet will work and once you remove that bolt the support comes right off the car. Hope that helps.

Ah, now I need to find something in a T47...not sure if my dad would have something that big or not. Thanks!

Once you get the right torx bit (t47 or 50) the swap is easy. THe worst part about the whole thing is taking off the interior pannels to get to the bolts. You may be lucky and just be able to pull them away a little but I like to remove them all together so I dont get any white stress marks.

It is a T50. My bf helped me with it because of the car being up so high on jack stands. I couldn't get the leverage. But it was easier to pull the end off the hatch first, then work on the bolt. Probably took us like 10-15 mins because of fighting with the plastic in the way. But now the hatch opens flawlessly.
