Happily returning to the F-body world

Thanks for the pics! Super helpful - I haven't seen any signs of 'milkshake' yet - as I mentioned previously the oil does look to be the right color and consistency, but seems to have a bit of a gas odor to it (but again, I could easily just be smelling my metal jerry can from the 70s that's in a near corner of the shop). Either way, no milkshake evidence is great news, and even if there _is_ gas in the oil it isn't enough to thin the oil noticeably to me.
I've dealt with gas-in-the-oil problems quite a bit on older motorcycles and it's always been pretty obvious when the oil was thinned out from it. Of course, those bikes hold a fraction of the oil this LT1 does.
Thanks for the pics, and those engine diagrams are awesome! I'm gonna print that and hang it on the shop wall myself!

There is some differents on the 93 to 95. They are small. I got all the original art from the scanned manuals I mentioned before. When I get some time I am going to do one for my 96 3800. It is just cut and past into paint.

Quick followup as I prep to start tearing into this motor - I know its in my best interest to do the water pump and opti while I'm in there, but should I worry with doing the timing chain and/or gears as well, since I'll have it torn down? There's ~120k on the motor if that helps.
Edit: Nevermind, I decided I'd be rather stupid to not replace the timing while I have it stripped. I'd hate myself if the timing chain broke or slipped (skipped?) in a few months and I had to do it all over again.

Another update - started the tear-down today with my dad - drained the oil first thing, no sign of milkshake! <successkid.jpg> Definitely a tiny bit of gas in there but given the way the car was treated since the head gasket let go, I'm not overly concerned with that.
No pic updates for this round as we stopped after just stripping the trim up top and draining the fluids, but progress is being made, slowly but surely. I'll probably get more into it tomorrow but the wife called me in for dinner so I decided to call it for the day today.
