new to the ls1 world
hi guys, new to the forums and new to camaro ownership. I kinda lucked into a 99 z28 ($4000!) when i wasnt even shopping for one. Since I thought this car unattainable on my budget I really didnt do much homework on it. Let me start off by asking where my new car fits in? i.e. not counting the driver what can smoke me and what can i smoke? I`ve only really raced a 87 mustang so far and lets just say im glad I bought what i bought. Also this is a high mileage car (160k), is it safe for me to start on this car or should i have the engine redone before I do anything?
i dont care if the motor has 1 million on it, it all depends on how it was maintained.
so if the motor is strong u can break into it and start making more power.
if its stock, u have 350hp and about 3500lbs
stock for stock, the only thing u will have to be worried about are the higher end sports cars. vettes, special edition stangs, some of the nicer turbo imports..... u should be running low 13s easy
modded, there is no telling.. wed have to know more about the builds

^ x2 how that car was maintained has a lot to do with what that engine will do for you. Although unless the car had just one owner.... that is going to be difficult to tell. However you get a mechanic that KNOWS LS1s to give it a very thorough look over.... even underneath. If he can put it on a lift even better. Maybe run some diagnostics.....Then go from there. In the mean time ..... decide what you want. These cars love to be modded. Mods and LS engines go together like peas and carrots.
good luck
good luck

my brother in law looked the car over before i bought it, he had some sort of computer dunno what kind but he said it cost about $7000 and it checked out on it. I changed the oil first thing and ive put aobut 1k miles on it since and i dont seem to be burning any or leaking any. The car does have a flowmaster on it (not sure if that really ups hp or not). One more quick question: this car has no z28 badging, the vin says it is a z28 but i have no emblems or any drill holes where emblems would have been, i have the "rs" spoiler and the 5 spoke chrome wheels that i see on a lot of z28s, was this like this from the factory or has some yahoo removed my badging along the way?
the emblems are held on buy a type of glue...so its easy to "de-badge" the car..5 spoke chrome wheels..thoes sound like c4 zr1 wheels..and im not sure about the "rs" spoiler...but yeah how the car is maintained makes a big difference..my uncle has a 2002 z28, it has almost 155k miles on it and it runs like its brand new...do you mean a full flowmaster exhaust? or just the mufflers?..post some pics up sometime to, we love pics lol

Well you could run the vin through carfax or autocheck.com if you know someone who has bought either and they can check it for you....
next option ....when you get insurance for it and you give them the vin...ask them what its showing
Last thing... if you open the hood and it has an LS1 in it...you are good to go! and if the speedo goes up to 150mph
My Z28 came with the RS kit from the factory...something SS's dont have as an option. It's possible they took the rest of the kit and emblems off...to give it a "sleeper" demeanor. Or they could have added just the RS spoiler...which I did to my old 94Z. Hopefully this was not a V6 to V8 conversion
my insurance agent said the vin came up as a z28, and i certainly have an ls1 so i guess im good. Unfourtunately my camera just broke so no pics for now, ill post some up soon. I have decided to focus on the interior for now i pulled a set of door panels off of a firebird and it seems to be a way better design so im gonna start there, by the way has anyone else noted the problems wiht camaro door panels? Every time i go to the "u-pull" salvage yard all the driver`s side door panels i see are bent at the seem up top with busted control holders. Im gonna give these firebird ones a shot since they seem to be a lot stronger design with a solid beam up top and no joint near the window/lock controls.
This mod has been done before by camaro guys. Not sure of any exact place you could find help but if you do a search on yahoo you should be able to track down some help if you need it. Defiantly post up some pics when you have time
