Sold my 4th gen about a year ago and have regretted it ever since, so I bought another. This time I've moved down to a 2nd gen. It's a 1979 Z28. I found it on Craig's List and it sounded like what I was looking for. I sent my nephew to pick it up because I trust his judgment, and I had to work. It had a little more rust than the owner had suggested so after some negotiating we settled on a price over the phone and I went to bed.

My nephew, who used my truck to go get the car, was to leave my truck and the car in back, but when I woke up all that was there is my truck. My first thought was he had trouble and had to drop the car and trailer, then It hit me that maybe someone already stole the car? Just called and found out it was later so he just left the truck and will bring the car over later. Whew! Now I'm anxious to see my new car but I've got to wait until lunch I guess.

Anyway, it's going to need some work but I'm happy to be a Camaro owner again.

OK first stupid question.

I was just looking at my title and expecting a VIN# something like 1Q87L9Lxxxxxx but instead I have a 1Z87L9Lxxxxxx looking at the VIN decoders I see only options for a Q or S

I have the same car, right down to the lower grill missing. Well before it got painted a darker blue. I don't know about the Z mine is a 78 and for sure has a Q. Gotta love those turbines.

You have me stumped on that one too, maybe someone changed the VIN tag for some reason? are you looking at the VIN# on the ownership? i never seen a VIN for 2nd gen camaro's with the second digit being a Z.

Try this site, it's a good decoder it works with all my camaro's VIN #'s.
type in your complete VIN and it should tell you everything. let me know what it says, im curious too.

if it doesnt show up, maybe the car was salvaged and re-VIN'd?

Looks like someone made a mistake on the title VIN#. I looked on my car and it's 1Q87L9Lxxxxxx but the title, which does say it's for a 1979 Camaro, 1Z87L9Lxxxxxx

I'm wondering what problems I'm going to have to get it straightened out? Will it require a trip to the local Highway Patrol/inspection department to verify the VIN?

could be just a misprint on the ownership and you may not have any probs at all, but if your worried and think it might be stollen or have a lean on it or just worried about the probs in general you could always look for a VIN tag from a donor car, im sure theres someone on this site or NastyZ28 site that has a parts car and doesnt need the VIN or ownership (wont cost too much in shipping)?

I think it was just a mistake because all the numbers match the VIN except for the 2nd which is a Z not a Q

Thats most likely it, just dont give up the whereabouts of the car until you change names
