Default handbrake cable gone?

pulled up the handbrake, and wooah it came all the way up, very little resistance, then let it down thinking that feels wrong, pull it up again and it barely reaches the first notch, and even thats with a fair amount of pull, Iknow that my pads and rear discs need replacing and the caliper slider(?) is a bit loose, although I doubt that this is relevant. Is this a simple case of replace the brake cable perhaps?

Default RE: handbrake cable gone?

Forgot to add... when I have got it on that first notch it does hold the car and it does let it go when I let the handbrake down. i read somewhere that it is self adjusting.....

Mine was like that - and I wound up replacing the rear calipers as my inspection guy mandated (pins were seized).
